Seeking Excellence Through Study Abroad
Written By Daisy Willis
The University of Hawaii at Hilo is a unique school, and boasts one of the highest percentages of racially diverse students from all over the world. Attending UHH is an obvious choice for students that are from the Big Island, but there are students that seek out our school for its unique location and diverse learning opportunities.
Amos Higgins is an Ecology Major and is currently studying abroad from Stirling, Scotland through the global exchange program. He arrived at the beginning of this Spring semester and his experience here so far has been excellent beyond his wildest dreams.
When asked why he chose Hawaii as his global destination, he stated “[I chose Hawaii] because I've grown up hearing stories about tropical islands and the wonderful cultures of the pacific. As I got older, I found out about the unique flora and fauna of Hawaii as it’s very famous. I wanted to come and see for myself - to learn about how ecosystems and evolution works in the Hawaiian Islands. Also, I wanted to learn how this island culture cultivates and lives sustainably - this is reflected in the culture. There is a lot of wisdom I can gather from this culture to share with my own back home.”

Amos is applying his existing knowledge of flora and fauna, as well as gaining a plethora of new skills, and it was all made possible through the global exchange program offered at UHH. As stated on the Center for Global Education and Exchange website “The first priority and fundamental mission of the Center for Global Education and Exchange (CGEE) is to internationally develop all aspects of the collegiate experience to assure that students are successful as future leaders in the greater world community. By providing quality study abroad and student exchange choices the CGEE fosters the development of the student's global perspective” .
A prime example of a student that has grown and flourished through his study abroad experience, Amos commented that UHH is a very enlightening and peaceful school. He also spoke about his experience with the CGEE program, saying that “the way I see it the program is an excuse to travel and learn. It is the travelling and learning which has caused me to grow spiritually and culturally. I have learned about life from another point of view - travelling to new lands makes this possible and expands the mind and soul. Learning Hawaiian wisdom is something everyone on the planet can benefit from.”
