Ever had big dreams of shooting or directing the next big screen film? UH Hilo's Third Annual Student Film Festival, created exciting opportunities for those individuals interested in film. The student film festival is an event organized and funded by Lava Shoot, The Board of Media Broadcasting, University of Hawai’i at Hilo Student Associations, and Student Activities Council. Geared towards promoting education for video production. the Student Film Festival creates an opportunity for students from the University of Hawaii at Hilo, Hawaii Community College, and all Hawaii island high schools to submit videos to be judged and viewed by the university community. As film producers, students are allowed the opportunity to potentially win prizes and recognition for their hard work.
Michael Lovell is a fourth year Performing Arts major who is also pursuing a minor in both Japanese and English. He is currently the General Manager for the University of Hawaii at Hilo's video production program: Lava Shoot.

All participants in the festival also received the opportunity to learn from filmmaking professionals at an intense two-day workshop at Hale Olelo. This workshop was taught by the award winning DawnRunner productions. “The workshop educated participants with everything they need to know about video production." Lovell stated.
"I have learned so much from my years working with Lava Shoot, but the most important thing I have learned in this experience is the value of Teamwork. Without a good functioning, passionate team- nothing can be done. I am confident that with the skills I have acquired, I will be able to succeed in any professional setting whether in a video production company, school, or in an office setting." Lovell stated.
