UH Hilo: Hoʻokahi Ka Umauma-One Heart, a video produced and filmed by the UH Hilo New Student Programs and UH Hilo Lava Shoot. Video found on the UH Hilo Lava Shoot Youtube Channel at, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNgyBiMRRE4.

Are you an incoming freshman looking for something fun to do on campus with your spare time? Or are you an older student looking for a way to get more involved with your university? Either way, the University of Hawaii at Hilo offers many wonderful extracurricular activities on campus for new and returning students alike!

Our on campus video production organization, Lava Shoot, is an organization open to any student interested in videography. They film events that happen on campus and create commercials, promotional videos, and informative clips for students and other campus organizations. The work they do is published on their YouTube channel for students and faculty to enjoy. The best part about Lava Shoot is the opportunities that the program offers to the students involved.

Goody Cacal, a first year pharmacy student and the lead editor for Lava Shoot, spoke about his experience with the program. He has been “volunteering” (most positions include a stipend) with the program for 2 years and is currently in charge of everything involving video editing. His days are spent in the office editing videos on Final Cut Pro. He’s also in charge of helping the rest of the officers have a basic understanding of editing, and all videos must go through him first before they upload and make them public. In addition, he works with the rest of the staff and helps in recording footage, along with giving advice on how certain things should be recorded for the purpose of making editing easier.

In an interview, Goody talked about how Lava Shoot has made him a better student, saying that “Lava Shoot has taught me a lot about how to balance my time as a full time student. Even though these are technically all Volunteer positions, we put so many hours of work every week into this group that it's essentially a job (that we love)! In addition to tackling school, I have had to learn about how to balance my time working in the office, working out in the field recording footage, along with teaching myself new techniques in video production. I've also learned tons of leadership skills and working as part of a team because the entire Lava Shoot team is composed of many different people that all have one common interest (making videos!). In addition, Lava Shoot has given me a chance to make so many connections with people on this campus. We have done collaborations with the entire student body for our Happy video and our "One Heart" video and I got to work with so many people I thought I would never get a chance to talk to.”

As Lava Shoot continues to grow, their are some changes students can expect. The group will be changing their name to Vulcal Video Productions and promise to have A LOT in store with their new name and direction they are going for! So stay tuned and keep an eye out for the new Vulcan Video Productions next school year! Or, if you would like to join the team you can visit the main campus center office and pick up an application. You can also visit Lava Shoot directly in their office at Campus Center 308 and talk to anyone that happens to the be in at the time. They are always looking for more volunteers, and they also have a few Officer positions that will be open next school year so turn in your applications soon. If you do become part of the Lava Shoot crew, they can train you on how to use all of the high tech equipment they have, and you can even get a stipend if you become an officer!
