The University of Hawaii at Hilo provides many amenities for students, one of the most visible being the Student Life Center. The center holds a gym and pool as well as rooms in which visitors may take a variety of classes, such as sunrise yoga or crossfit.
Freshman Isabel Lucero has been going to the Student Life Center since last semester, and claims the experience has helped her a lot, especially in regards to coping with the stress of student life. She mentions the school puts pressure on her both academically and financially.
Lucero currently attends two classes at the center: Zumba and Jiu Jitsu. Both classes have given her enlightenment in addition to balance in her academic career. “It keeps you sane,” stated Lucero, who then continued that students need balance if they want to function better when it comes to assignments and learning.
Zumba provides Lucero a sense of community. “I feel like anyone who does zumba here in college becomes part of a big family,” she muses. She states that even students who cannot dance too well will be accepted by the Zumba instructors and the other students; this type of classroom dynamic, according to the freshman, makes it easier to catch on.

At Jiu Jitsu, Lucero experienced a similar welcoming environment, but different lessons. She voices that the martial art has taught her patience, how to focus, and self-defense.
Stating that all students should take these classes, Lucerno thinks all students should at least try some sort of physical education. She adds that such education not only makes an individual physically healthy but mentally healthy. Physical classes, according to her, affects an individual’s mental education as well.
