A Student of the Board
Written by Maia Furer
The University of Hawaii at Hilo Board of Student Publications (BOSP) oversees three student-funded and student-run publications here on campus. The three are: Hohonu, a journal of academic writing, Kanilehua, a magazine about creative and artistic products, and Ke Kalahea, the university newspaper. The BOSP assists each with purchases and promotion as well as answers their questions and guides them.
University student Sadie Dossett, the board’s Vice Chair, explained that she uses skills she acquired from lectures and textbooks in her special position. Elaborating, she stated that skills such as being able to decipher information and prioritize has helped her a lot, especially in regard to BOSP-related emails.
“If you get an email that's really long and rambling,” she asserted, “you can [] [just] take out the important information and understand what is needed.”
Concerning the organizational skills she garnered from assignments, Dossett expressed that she employs them in her position to stay more dedicated to her tasks outside of the classroom. The university student has also acquired skills from her position as well—for example, interacting with people.

“[E]ven if you[’]re doing group work in class,” the Vice Chair pointed out, “you’re maybe working with them [classmates] for two weeks. On the other hand, you really have to know the people you’re working with so that you know their skills and when it will best to work with them”
Dossett stated that even though she does not know where she imagines herself in the next ten years, she did mention that, concerning the immediate future, her participation in the BOSP has really influenced her life. She hopes to continue participating in the BOSP and continue to gain new experiences and skill from this opportunity.
